• First experience with Mac since January 4, well, my MacBook Pro came with OS X 10.8. When I executed the command java -version the OS prompted me to install the JRE 6, well I ignored or cancelled, because I want use the JDK 7 available by Oracle. Well I have and already installed the jdk-7u10-macosx-x64.dmg file.
• I also have a mac and I am deeply disapointed there's no jdk 1.6 available for mac users There is not even available to the new Leopard os. It seems that Apple let mac users down. This is a serious consideration for me not to buy a mac again.

Until here I am OK with what I did.

Now I want install an IDE, I have the spring-tool-suite-3.1.0.RELEASE-e4.2-macosx-cocoa-x86_64-installer.dmg file. When I do double click in the file it appear like a device and then I do again double click to really install, but.... the OS again prompted me to install the JRE 6, practically the JDK 7 was ignored.

Since it is my first time with Mac and I dont want make a disaster with the OS, what I should do?

Depending on your processor, the downloaded file has one of the following names:

• jdk-8uversion-macosx-amd64.dmg

• jdk-8uversion-macosx-x64.dmg

Where version is 6 or later.

1. Download the file.

   Before the file can be downloaded, you must accept the license agreement.

2. From either the Downloads window of the browser, or from the file browser, double click the .dmg file to launch it.

   A Finder window appears containing an icon of an open box and the name of the .pkg file.

3. Double click the package icon to launch the Install app.

   The Install app displays the Introduction window.

   
   

   Enter the Administrator login and password and click Install Software.

   The software is installed and a confirmation window appears.

   Determining the Default Version of the JDK
